Second to last CSA share

Yup - the headline is right...  this is the second to last CSA share of the year for the veggie CSA.  The plants have produced about all they can and the 40 degree temperature swings between night and day are putting the end on the the plants that thought they might hang on.  But before we say our goodbyes - let's look at the second to last CSA share of 2010.

Sept 21 share

What's in the share?

More tomatoes - your turn to identify the varieties in the box since we have been doing that for you all summer.

There's some swiss chard and cabbage for greens.  More green and red peppers, poblano peppers, jalapeno peppers and Anaheim peppers - again...  your turn to ID which is which and test your skills from the summer past.

The squash looking thing - that's a delicata squash and we HIGHLY recommend finding a simple recipe to roast it...  excellent taste!

There's also a bunch of herbs in there - maybe more than you can use...  so there's a few tips on preserving them for the long winter ahead.

First - from top to bottom - parsley (hey - how's your plant from the very first share doing? - post pictures on Facebook for us to see)  Next down is some of the last of the basil.  Then there's a bunch of mint - 3 kinds - peppermint is all green, lemon mint is the kind with white and yellow on the leaves and chocolate mint is the kind with the darker stalk.  Finally at the bottom of the picture is oregano.

Way to preserve - dry them in a warm place with low humidity and slowly moving air or freeze them in ice cube trays with some water...  then when you want to add the taste of fresh herbs simply pull and ice cube from the freezer and drop it in whatever you are making - instant fresh herb!
