Foul Forage

A rooster crowing about his pasture

You know that we have been telling people "you are what you eat" for a long, long time... (but mom, I don't wanna be a brussel sprout!).  Well - here's a short and sweet study from the folks at Penn State about the quantifiable benefits you get from chicken raised on pasture (and a managed pasture at that).  It's a simple read and one worth skimming for the highlights...  If you haven't ordered your chickens you should...  and if you have and this makes you want more - they are available.  I mean, consider this - there are 52 weeks in a year...  how many nights do you want to feed your family healthy chicken?

Here's the highlights about birds raised on pasture:

  • three times more omega-3 fat in their eggs than did birds raised on an industrial diet

  • about twice as much vitamin E in eggs from pastured birds

  • 40 percent more vitamin A in the yolks of pasture-fed birds than in the caged bird

Here's the full article that came to me via twitter - spend 5 minutes over there pecking through it...  Pasture-ized Poultry
