Chicken orders are right around the corner
Thursday, March 25, 2010 at 4:06PM
I have gotten a lot of emails from people through Local Harvest (like a couple every day) about our pastured chickens and our CSA . That's super cool! The frustrating part is - we just don't have the capacity to get all the chickens and veggies into all the eager hands we are meeting!
That said - here's an excerpt from an email response I sent earlier today - regarding questions about this years chickens.
We are about to send out our annual order/reservation forms in the next week or so - which means your timing is great (if you are interested - you should sign up on the chicken page here to receive email notifications)
We offer whole pasture raised broilers. We process them on the farm. Processing entails humane slaughter, plucking evisceration and cleaning. The chickens then are placed in shrink bags for freezing. People who have reserved their chickens show up with a cooler and a checkbook, pick out their birds and pay - last year we even had some folks show up early with lawn chairs to watch the processing in action (not for the faint of heart - but honest food)!
Typically we have a couple of processing days during the summer where the chickens go home with people - one in July and another in August.
This year we will be charging $3.49 per pound - typically the average almost 5#.
If you are looking for a little information about how we raise them - this might be of interest - here.
Finally - if you have anymore questions - don't hesitate to ask!
