Netflix Movie Review: Super Size Me

Perhaps not quite in the category of "oldie but goodie" it's also not quite as shiny new as Avatar was (which was the first movie we have seen in the theater in almost all of 2009 - ehhh).

"Super Size Me" is a fairly well balanced look, as far as documentaries go,  at the issues surround the fast food society we are becoming.  The star, producer, director, hero decides to completely live off of the McDonalds menu for 30 days.  Three squares a day - all from the golden arches.  The kicker is - if they ask him to "Super Size" - then he has to take it.  You know things are not going to go well for him just given the premise.  The army of doctors and nutritionists he enlists to chart his downfall progress keeps the expectations of a grim fate high.

While all documentaries set out with a point to prove and pretty much only show you the data they collect that fully supports their initial supposition - overall "Super Size Me" was pretty fair.  Let's be clear - this is no scientific process piece - but it's also not a completely fact-less blame game like "Who killed the electric car?".  I mean, I think most people logically understand that eating fast food frequently is a bad thing to do - this movie just takes those lessons and turns up the volume in an edu-tainment sorta way.  Seriously - what do you expect when a health food guy jams a super sized value meal - all of it - into the untrained stomach...

Is it worth the entertaining hour and a half of your life - sure.  Does it paint fast food in a grim light - of course.  Did it make me want a BigMac, seeing as how I haven't had one in years...  100% - yes! (but I resisted the urge)

End result: Rent It
