Seedy Thoughts

I kinda scooped this post with my tweet this morning here. I admit it - I have been having some very seedy thoughts lately... Likely because that magical "8-10 weeks before transplant" wording on the outside of several packets is coming to pass... it really is only 8-10 weeks before June 1! Which means - it's time to start planting the seeds in the basement. Which I have been doing - sorta.
The onion seeds and the celery root seeds are going. Over the next week or so I'll start some of the other guys that take a long time and then by April 1 I'll have just about everything that can't be sown directly in the ground going.
That of course means I'll need a trip or two to the garden centers to get get the potting soil... and some additional pots and trays... All those extra seeds too - the ones you knew you were not going to grow but you find at the store and just can see life going on without them!

At any rate - these are the plans on and off over the next several weeks - more pots - more plants - more soil - more work. And before you know it - this lone tray will be surrounded by his (it's) closest friends of the green variety.

(now - if only I could hook the seedlings up to Twitter - like this)

silly seed places - always putting them right there - looking like they need a warm home to go back to and sprout :)

Can you point me in the right direction to find NGM seeds? There are so many catalogs, so many websites. Where do you begin? Who has good prices and good seeds? Any help you can offer is much appreciated :)

THANKS!

Misty,
There's lots of places that offer NGM seeds (not genetically modified)... as a matter of fact a large portion of the consumer seed world is NGM... it takes BIG BUCKS to create something like Roundup Ready corn - never mind all the cultavars of other veggies!
If you find a seed labeled "organic" - certified - it's NGM. Also heirloom seeds are NGM. Even most of the F1 hybrids of popular veggies are NGM (A F1 hybrid is the first sexual cross between 2 varieties that produces the "desired" offspring but only for that first generation (F1)) - that's NOT a GMO - it's just a selected breeding.

Great sources for seeds includes Johnny Seeds, Pinetree, RH Shumway, Burpee, Park, Harris Seed... actually - like I started with - most all of these different consumer seed catalogs offer terrific selections and good seeds.

Personally - we used Johnny, Pinetree, Shumway and Park this year... and we will stop by a local Harris Seed to complete all the plants for our CSA.

Thank you! That is good to know. It makes perfect sense that consumer seeds would be less likely to be NGM, I hadn't really thought of that, but it would not be cost effective to modify for a small market like that. The number of websites is overwhelming. Now I have a bit of direction...I am excited to expand our garden this year, and to get the kids involved in choosing what to produce.

That's great! Keep an eye here maybe there will be some tips or useful information to help you along... and if not - just ask questions and we will do our best to offer guidance and insight in helping you get your family involved and eating the "fruits of your labors!"
