Nowhere NEAR the last straw
Wednesday, March 18, 2009 at 5:29AM
As the recent tweet shows (http://twitpic.com/272rp) last night I spent some quality time with the Kubota and got the long row of garlic covered in straw just as they are peaking up. Last fall when I put the garlic in I was in a rush - I even recall it went in kinda late. And in my haste I never got the straw covering on there... which leads to me needing to get the straw on this spring... which then takes way more time since you can't just throw it on when they are growing ("protect the tender shoots" was my mental mantra as I worked)... so - as I was slipping in the still very muddy spring soil - I kept thinking to myself - Why didn't I do it last fall?
It's amazing how time changes perspective - I don't REMEMBER not having time last fall... I obviously was lazy.... obviously. So - I tore into the large round bale we got last fall and completely consumed myself in a whirlwind experience of mold and dust that no matter which direction I went to escape the gray cloud - the wind sent the spores chasing me. (Should there not be any posting activity for a while - it would be due to my unintentional "desire" to try and grow mushrooms in my lungs)
Anyhow - I got the row covered in straw and even had some time to pull some leftover weeds from the strawberries I planted last fall (again - no straw on them either)... and the asparagus patch - needs straw... so do the raspberry bushes... Yeah - apparently I need more straw!

Wow - I'm jealous of your big toy. Sure, there's some discussion as to whether or not it's big enough, but it looks like it's just the right size for your kinda farm.
Sure, you could always use bigger, but there's no winning that battle.
I've got something like seven bales of straw kinda rotting out from this past fall that will get worked in on the beds as they're planted. I'm sure they'll be chock full'a mushrooms and mold when I cut them open. I flipped one over the other day and it had a bunch of worms scurrying into it...
Your purple flowers were beautiful - were those crocuses?? They were WIDE open!
Yup - crocuses (croci ?) - sure - those!
I also discovered a leech from the straw crawling up my arm :)
Gonna need another round bale at the minimum - likely 2!
Bigger tractor - you got it - never ending cycle :)
(Silly TwitPic - still having issues this morning)
Ok, i don't think I'd want a leech crawling anywhere on me!
