"Fit" Bluebirds
Wednesday, July 9, 2008 at 12:24PM
Darwin wrote about the concept of "Survival of the Fittest" - which is often maligned and misrepresented by people who don't understand the definitions of the words used. In simple terms - "fitness" is the ability to produce offspring that will survive to reproduction age - thereby increasing that species numbers.
Well - we have success - the Bluebirds that had a tragic failure earlier this year have successfully fledged a nest of 4 babies. And a couple of days later - we still hear them calling from the trees at the edge of the field for mom and dad to come feed them.
No photos of the small ones - but I did see the last one actually leave the box! Instead we can share a picture of the replacement mama sitting on the weather station watching for her offspring.
