Chicken (not) Little
Sunday, July 6, 2008 at 6:45AM
At a bit over 5 weeks now - these chickens are getting big. As a matter of fact we just did a 4.5 hen on the rotisserie the other night and I have to day - as we were looking at it going round and round - and the pen in the background... it kinda dawned on us that these guys are now the size of, well, dinner.
That's a good thing - although it does make the prospects of the task at hand in 3 weeks seem a little darker and more daunting than before... but no worries - it will get done... and I'm sure it will be a very tasty outcome as well.
Obviously the roosters (roo's) are larger than the hens. Nature likes to give brawn's to the men... :) The fellows are also starting to step out with some very nice stylish head gear going on in the form of their comb and waddle arrangement. Apparently - if these were a breeding chicken - the ladies dig it.
At any rate - they are getting big - and chewing up the pasture where the pen has been - leaving lots of fertilizer in their wake. Every once and a while we will be watching them from afar and see some chicken mayhem - which is usually the result of the discovery of a bug, slug or grub... all of which results in elevated levels of clucking, running and - ultimately - happy chickens... that result in yummy dinners.
Of course - the other side is - as they continue to grow - we have entered the part of this project where they often require tending to in the morning AND the night.
That's OK - given how healthy they are - this is absolutely going to be worth it...
And I think I'll be taking orders for next year...
