Sunday's "Twisted" Storm

We knew there were some thunderstorms in the forecast - as a matter of fact Kelli was looking at the clouds on the radar and they were still supposed to be an hour or so away...

I was at the kitchen sink making us lunch at 12:45 and saw the huge trees in the corner of the field just bend right over and watched a good sized stream of leaves and debris fly right straight up into the sky, spinning the whole way up. They were contained in a darker than surrounding air mass that I would best describe as a "pillar". That massive disturbance headed right towards the destruction reported over on Eddie Road - and I also saw the massive wind line extending outward hit more trees at the fields end and start coming up the field. I yelled to Kelli to "get the doors" (since our doors are always slamming with the big cross draft) - and I yelled to her "this is gonna be really bad - get ready" - she heard the sound in my voice - she thought my next statement was going to be "get to the basement".

The road over from us was covered on the news - of course the story is all wrong... This hit us at 12:45 - the big storms reported didn't come through for another hour or so...

I know what I saw - and I have seen a lot of wind storms in my life - this was something I have never seen before and I watched a twisting rotation of tree parts heading right up into the sky.

As for damage - well - a whole bunch of shingles were standing up - none off - one needs me up there to help it out however!

The corn got bent over - don't know if it will recover.

Some tomato plants got pitched about and tore up.

All the brad leaves of the summer squash are turned over - might have lost a couple of plants.

Chickens - unfazed.

It was BAD! But over in 3 minutes.

ADDED 7/21:
This is a better story here.

When you check on the chickens in the field tonight, look around to see if there are a pair of Ruby slippers or a little missing dog named Toto.

Ok, now I see your comments on the squash plants. Don't worry - sounds like you might have lost some (this is my medical opinion), so I'll be sure to bring you some squash...

I'm sure that was scary (AND exciting) as hell - but at least you guys, Watson, and the chickens are ok!
