Grilling (up a) in a storm
Wednesday, June 18, 2008 at 8:35PM
We like to keep life simple. It's just easier that way.
So one thing we have started in practice over the years is what we call "grill-fest" - whereby we gather lots of meat - marinate or otherwise prepare it - and grill it all at once.
We then bring the mat in off the grill and put it in vacuum bags, seal it up and freeze it... making a very healthy and fresh tasting meal some day after a long day at work (either in the office or in the field). We have found this to just make sense over someone else preparing meals for us - and adding all those nasty preservatives and other things to a frozen dinner... plus it also financially smart.
Anyhow - in the past I have grilled in some bad conditions - like last fall - but this time took the cake.
Just about as soon as the chicken hit the grill this massive dark cloud started covering the horizon and moving in fast...
First flip of the meat - you could hear the thunder - feel the cool breeze and smell the ozone...
And that's where - somewhere in between done and half done - I started dodging the 1" sized hail and decided - maybe - this wasn't such a good idea.
Never the less - I pressed on and we have a lot more chicken in the freezer - and the bumps on my head from the hail are mostly down now :)

LOL This HAS been a crazy, stormy spring so far! And I keep hearing stories of everyone else getting hail (including punching holes through a work-buddy's eggplant leaves just the other day), and yet we've had none of it at home... No complaints there.
It's crazy what we'll tolerate to grill up some good meat!
I should start doing more like you guys - not grilling on a meal-by-meal basis but also grilling some in advance and vaccu-bagging it. Are you happy with the results? I guess I find the cooking somewhat cathartic?
