Mid-May Mayhem

It's the time of year when things get almost as busy as that time of year where you are harvesting the crops. This is sorta the pre-planting rush... where you make sure you have all the seeds that are ready for the last frost planting... when all the plants you started from seed back in cold days of the winter are ready and re-potted so they can grow every last little bit before they are put into the ground and asked to stop being so needy and start producing and providing... when the seedling is asked to grow up into a seed-bearing plant.
Well - to get there, like all things, there's a process. And over the last week or so we have been spending a lot of time re-potting the plants as they have reached the capacity of their 4" pots. And that means lots of potting soil and lots of 1 gallon pots... we used almost 100 1-gallon pots and 2 3.8cu ft bales of potting soil... but - we are done!
These hots here are about 1/3 of the final amount... but they are looking good and happy! And in another week or so - they will be getting put into the Earth.
Speaking of - the onions are all up now, the lettuce is up and the second planting should be sprouting any day now. All the pumpkins and melons are in the ground now (pushing it on them - but I love early melons!) The peas are going good... and next weekend is Memorial Day - so that means full speed ahead!
But - even with all the craziness - we still manage to take the time to "smell the, uhh, lilacs" - which this year are almost too sweet! They have been brilliant - and long lasting with the cooler weather. Ahh - gotta love lilacs.
This one is planted in the position old farmhouses used to place them - between the house and sceptic... the thinking used to be that the lilac smelled sweeter than the sceptic in the spring time... I don't know if that's true - but ti's a cool story... and a beautiful bush.

Lucky you - getting to play in the dirt some more, and getting ready for the big holiday weekend planting! I'm in Chicago, won't be home til Sunday, and am just hoping all my plants are fine.

Oh, and I'm going to have to restart some pumpkin seeds. I'd left their flat outside before they sprouted, and I think it got too cold and wet for them - they must've rotted rather than sprouting. Bummer.
