A bright idea

Not that we are some sort of tree-huggers or anything like that- but we do want to participate in good energy and environmental conservation. So - aside from our extreme recycling practices now that we moved (based more on the fact that we now pay per pound for garbage), we are also looking to conserver energy wherever we can in the house. Sure, some day we would love to have our own PV setup on top of the barn and our own wind turbine too... but for now - we are in conservation mode - not generation mode. And - aside from not running the air conditioner... and Kelli deciding to line dry our work clothes as opposed to use the electric dryer our great white (light) hope is the CFL.
Yet - in my opinion the technology isn't exactly ready for prime time in the house. Like - whens the last time you thought about how many degreed Kelvin a light source was? Exactly.
Anyhow - we had a failure with the 3-way CFL in the livingroom tonight... way too yellow... (only 2800K - for those still reading). (hint-one is yellow)

And there was a success in the most used lights in the house - those in the master bath... special globe styles that are a nice 3000K... Can you guess which side in my happy photo has the 3 CFL's?

Brett's really big into using the flourescent lights as well, so with a number of rooms in the house, plus the basement, you usually have to wait a second after flipping the switch before the light actually kicks on, and with some of them it seems to take a second or two to warm up to a nice enough brightness to actually see anything.

I'm all for the conservation, but agree that maybe the lights "aren't' quite there yet"... Still, we've moved forward with this, and have most of the lights running with CFL.

Brett switched us into recycling of paper, cans, glass, etc at the old condo, but they don't offer recycling where we are now. I now feel like a BAD person for NOT recycling whatever I can.

I've decided I'm going to try shredding alot of our paper that would've gone to recycling, and then add that to the compost. We'll see how that goes...I may get too frustrated with it. But I will say all my kitchen scraps are going into the new compost pile, to which I've added some friends' grass clippings and composted manure from a nearby horsefarm. I have plans to work our shredded paper into that as well...
