Panettone - Please!
Sunday, December 2, 2007 at 9:37PM
Since Kelli bought me that Kitchen-Aid stand mixer
a month back - my interest in breads has been renewed... so when I have time - the flour, water and yeast derivatives start flying. It's really an awesome machine that I'd recommend to anyone that you click on an buy for yourself (or as a nice gift). Since my attention span is short and kneading hurts my wrists - this actually does that work for me and lets me make "picture perfect" breads - almost every time.
Anyhow - now that we have entered the month of December - I felt compelled to start testing some holiday baking waters and see what will be on the feast and menu over Christmas. And I figured with this mixer - I feel confidant to go after some of those harder to reach dishes... Like Panettone.
Well, so I didn't quite get the bread to stay inside the traditional cardboard ring... See, as I was preparing the ring, I got frustrated trying to get the wax paper down inside it to make a bowl. Kelli made, what at the time, was a great suggestion - just ring the cardboard with the wax paper. Still seems logical to me... well, apparently the bread had it's own thoughts on this and decided to defy gravity and poke out the bottom... which resulted in this somewhat modern art form of the Panettone.
Still - the final product was quite tasty. Very moist and flavorful. Kelli and I have been big fans of traditional Stolen for the holiday bread - and this is quite similar... I don't know which one we will be making. Maybe a hybrid this year - the Panettone in braided form perhaps?
Goes great with tea!

Looks good - I've never had panettone or stolen. It looks like it has those candied red and green cherries inside? And hey, once you start slicing it, you don't necessarily notice the odd shape that came out of the oven - and it still tastes great, I'm sure!
