Some like it HOT
Wednesday, November 28, 2007 at 12:41PM
One of the challenges I face here at the new place is the lack of a climate controlled workshop. Since in the past the workshop had been in the basement - it was always moderately warm and "free to heat" - because we had to heat the house.
Now that I have all the space in the barn, the convenience of a drive in bay (2 really) and plenty of room for projects and stuff - I find the need for heat to be a difficult question to answer. While arguably the easiest way to heat the barn is with another line off the propane tank to a heater - I also can say firmly and clearly that I don't want to pay for that amount of propane! Also, since the barn is still not finished on the inside with the wall insulation and has NO insulation in the ceiling - truly heating the space this winter is not only impractical - it's also highly improbable.
Enter the most awesome kerosene space heater
ever - a 55,000 BTU heater that is not deafeningly loud, does not stink to high heaven, and just plain works when you want it to:
(Yes, I know, the kerosene can is not DOT compliant in coloring... but it was cheaper and bigger... and there is a big black K on the side to keep it out of the generators.)
Sure - this solution means I still have a "warm-up" period when I go out to the barn - and it's not perfect... but once I get the ceiling on next year with blown in insulation up there - I think this + a wood stove will keep the barn nice and toasty on even the coldest days of the year.
Of course - maybe someday I'll have a solar or wind powered heating solution for the barn... but that's just a twinkle in my eye right now.

I love to heat with wood. It just feels warmer for some reason. Must be the whole guy with fire thing lol!
There is an element of that - no doubt. It's a nice warm heat - unlike any other!
