If you have ever picked up a book that talks idyllically about moving to the country and living a slow paced, relaxing, pastoral life… apparently the author failed to include the preface that said what you are about to read is fiction. Things around here never seem to completely slow down and we are not even a full time farm! As a matter of fact – things are starting to pick up in anticipation of the final spring thaw and the busy season ahead.
We are near completing a very cool project in the basement that we will share photos and instructions of when it’s done. It’s probably something that a few of you have thought about doing but for one reason or another haven’t… which is why it has taken us so long to do it ourselves!
We have boxes of seeds that have been arriving at the house in anticipation of starting to plant things in another month and some odd days. This spring we will be using low hoop houses to get cold weather hardy plants started earlier than ever before. Things like early spring spinach taste better when it’s colder out because the plants concentrate the sugars… So – that’s not too far away!
Then there’s the CSA we kicked off and have farm more interest than we expected – so the next step is to get the contracts signed and the deposits in. If you are on the list or still interested we are doing this first come first served so people who were interested but don’t send in deposits may make room for you (notification emails are going out this weekend – so if you are interested that’s when you find out if you made the cut!)
Then there’s the work ahead for the chickens… not just the broilers this year (boy do I have a great upgrade to the pasture pens I’ll be showing in coming months) but we also are doing egg layers this year… and I need to get going on their coop!
The days are getting longer – that’s for sure… just wish the list of things to do that rolls with the seasons didn’t have to follow the sun!
