Not me! The triploid watermelon we grew this year.
Huh?
Ok – “seedless” – triploid is the scientific term for “extra chromosome that makes you sterile” – and these watermelons have that.
It’s been a tough battle to get them to grow – their very VERY finicky when it comes to germination and I actually had Johnny Seed send me another packet of these since the first ones didn’t go. They also need special “male” plants planted that pollinate these mutant ladies – to produce the bright green and round fruit you see here.
This guys sounded wonderfully hollow – must be ripe. Smelled great – must be ripe (picture me on all 4′s in the vine patch smelling this puppy). The spot on the bottom where it was sitting had developed stripes not a white spot – must be ripe. So inside it came – Kelli on my heels because the only thing she loves more than fresh watermelon is fresh SEEDLESS watermelon.
Onto the cutting board – slice – the middle is white. :(
Well – next week there will be another mutant ready out there – and we will just wait longer.
