The struggle for survival

Just like the rising sun in the morning, the spring rains in April… so to do the Tree Swallows arrive and add yet another challenge to the Eastern Bluebirds attempts to claim houses over the invasive House Sparrow. Every year the dance is the same – Bluebirds “own the house”, then the sparrows takes it, then the Tree Swallows take it… lather, rinse, repeat… As of this morning the battle lines favor the swallows – it appears that the bluebirds have moved to the new PVC nest boxes I put up that are supposed to be highly competitively favorable to their nesting practices.
Kelli has an aversion to the Swallows because of their raucous nature and aerial acrobatics – she refers to them as the ICB’s (Insane Clown birds) – I personally approve of their insect heavy diet and proximity to the house. Regardless – they are back as yet another sign of springs unfolding diversity…
Now – if only I can get the new asparagus crowns in near the nest box today without being dive bombed…
