Darkness circles…

Sure – it’s an ominous title – but it’s descriptive of all the gloom and doom that the media and dinner tables across the country are discussing about the economy – and some might even say the fate of our country.
As readers know – I try to stay away from politics and religion (two topics you can build a lot of readership around – and conversely drive a lot of people away) I don’t try and press, change, impose, preach, or persuade anyone to think or do anything – other than potentially consider the other side of any given argument… something I’m personal afraid far too many people are incapable of in our frantic “must commit” daily lifestyles… My favorite example of that is trying to place an order in that famous national coffee house that my wife likes so much as a rare indulgence… People in line are all jockeying for position – who will stump the barista – who’s drink will be the longest, most impressive sounding concoction of 3 basic ingredients – coffee, sugar, milk. Then when you get there – you have to commit – instantly and eternally – on a cup of overpriced, slightly over brewed coffee. At the time of order there is not permission given to question – sample – consider… it’s do or die time. Commit or be banished!
Well – the title of this essay was meant to reflect not on the impending crisis of irresponsibility (and now inaction) that has captured the national spotlight – instead the title here is really a reflection on the fact that fall is really here… I find myself staggering down the dark stairs in the mornings now – wondering occasionally how I ever managed those chickens for 8 weeks when it was “this dark in the morning” – only to think about the changing seasons.
THe days may be growing shorter and darker – and so might the national condition… but it’s important now, more than ever, to take the time to notice the small things which we can not control – enjoy the changing of the season.

Your subject heading is perfect – now instead of appreciating the rising sun on my way in to work, I can look up and check out all the stars, and even see the bands of the Milky Way. Oh, and brrrrr…it’s a bit chillier in the mornings! (But no frost this morning)
